And no, I’m not a member yet. I’m a slacker.

I still need to set aside the time to get my paperwork together and to get it checked and then printed out on the precious paper.

I was quite surprised by the meeting. I’m in Savannah, so I had envisioned old ladies in big, bright-colored hats, sipping tea. That wasn’t the case. We did have some refreshments and most of the people were considerably older than me, but no big hats, no huge formalities, and no tea.

The meeting was held at the botanical gardens, but naturally nothing was in bloom. We met in the Civil War Era building on the grounds.

They had a very interesting speaker. He wrote a book about his ancestors who were amongst the first settlers of Savannah. It made me again wish that I had some roots in this very interesting area.

I’m planning on attending the next meeting and hopefully getting my paperwork turned in before we make our big move to El Paso in June. Wish me luck!

Lucky me, I got a present in the mail the other day. A marriage record for Matilda’s second marriage, to Jasper Marion Miller. It lists both of her parents!!!

Now I need to get all of my papers together and see if I can finally get this thing submitted!

Last week, I met with the sweetest little lady in her 90′s. She has been a member of the DAR for over 60 years. Wow!

I now have the paperwork I need to fill in for my application – and I have a lot of work to do.

I’m realizing that there are many simple documents that I don’t have. Things I’ve overlooked because I already had the date.

I called my mom and asked her to look through her things to see if she had certificates for her parents, since she ended up with my grandma’s papers. I may have to order them instead…

I have been on an ordering frenzy. Birth certificates. Marriage certificates. Wills and Probate Records. I can’t wait until the documents start appearing in my mailbox. It’s kind of like Christmas.

I’m hoping that I’m able to find everything that I need to prove my line. Luckily, I have two ancestors that are fairly close on my tree, so if I can’t find the documents for one, perhaps I can do the other instead.

As I’m sitting here in my hotel room, recovering from this week’s maladies (strep throat followed by a cold – no fair!) and trying to block out the Disney Channel (I’ve got to keep the kiddos happy), I started thinking. Coherent thoughts have been few and far between this week, so I am happy to be thinking at all.

Anyway, I wondered to myself – why haven’t I joined a lineage society? Because those are the things that go through my silly mind when I have nothing else to think about. It frightens my husband, I’m sure.

So, I started looking around on the DAR website, which I have never done before. Shame on me!

I searched and found that I have at least 5 ancestors (that I know of) that would qualify. Dudley Glass, Charles Clark Moorman, Nathaniel Newman Hilton, Patrick Cavit, and Ambrose Garrett.

It looks like the membership process and documentation required are quite extensive, but I think that it would be worth it. Once I get settled into my new house this summer, I’m going to try to start the process of joining.

My question is – where do I join? We’re moving to Savannah, but it will only be home for a couple of years. When my husband finally retires from the Army in a few years, we will be settling down in Washington state. Do I join a chapter in WA or GA?

For those of you veteran DAR members, do you have any tips for me? What should I expect? How long does the process take?
