There is one advantage to taking a long break from doing research though. Records are always being added online and when you haven’t looked for a while, it feels like you’ve hit the jackpot.

Here is one of the things I found this week – the naturalization petition of my step-grandmother, Margaret Rose Barnard Ogden Sanchez.

I always hate reading obituaries for people who were taken in the prime of their life.

This man was a son of Milton Francis Sanchez, a brother to my great-grandfather, Theodore Francis Sanchez. He would have been my grandfather’s first cousin, although he died the same year my grandpa was born.

The article doesn’t mention what this man died of, but he was only 34 yrs old and left behind a wife and four children. Very sad.

This was an unidentified clipping, so I don’t have info on the newspaper it was from. I’m sure it was a local paper though – in Keokuk county, IA.

Frederick M. Sanches, son of Milton and Almeda Sanchez, was born near Hedrick, July 3rd, 1884 and passed into the Great Beyond at his home in Martinsburg, Oct. 10th, 1918, at the age of 34 yrs. 3 mo. and 7 days.

He was converted in the M.E. Church of this place in early life. At the time of his death he was a respected member of both the Masonic and Modern Woodman Lodge. He leaves to mourn his loss his father and mother a devoted wife and four children, Glady Marie, Mary Almeda, William Frederick, and Paul Eugene. One sister, Mrs. Belle Lotspiech and one brother, Harry Sanchez besides a host of near and dear friends who extend to the bereaved family their sincere sympathy in their hour of their bereavement.

Private services were conducted at the home Saturday at 2:30 P.M. by Rev. Chas. Hawk of the M.E. church. Interment was at the Mt. Zion cemetery.

The Martinsburg Masonic Lodge had charge of the services at the grave.

My great-grandfather, Theodore Sanchez, was a barber by trade.

This is a picture I made a copy of when I was visiting my grandfather a number of years ago and of course I didn’t make any notation of where this shop was or who is in the picture. My grandpa has since died and I don’t know who has the original of this pic – and if it might have writing on the back of it. I really make myself mad sometimes.

Anyway, I’m assuming that this was his barber shop, or one he worked in. I’m just not sure of when it may have been taken and where it is located – in Minnesota or Washington. Any ideas on the time period?

That is not Theodore standing in the front, that I know. He might be the one standing in the background, but I’m not sure. I’m sharing this with family in hopes that they might have some answers.

If nothing else, this is a neat picture of an old barber shop.

This is the will of my 2nd great-grandfather, Jacob Frederick Sanchez-Tereso. He was almost 20 years older than his wife and still had young children when he wrote his will. As you can see, he wanted to make sure that they were provided for in case he died. My great-grandfather, Theodore F.
I found this will in the Keokuk County Courthouse in Sigourney, Iowa. It was file No. 1187, in a large bundle of loose papers. I don’t think that the clerk was very happy that I wanted copies of them all, but oh well- that’s their job, right?

I’m not quite sure how long my grandpa’s family lived in the Monitor area, but I don’t think that it was very long. They had moved from Minnesota and ended up moving on to Western Washington, where my grandpa spent the rest of his life.

MARRIED AT ANOKA.

MR. THEODORE SANCHEZ AND MISS PETRECIA MELHUS ARE HAPPILY JOINED IN THE HYMENEAL VOWS.

The marriage of Mr. Theodore Sanchez to Miss Petrecia Melhus occurred at the residence of the officiating clergyman, Rev. F. R. Leasch, a Baptist minister in the city of Anoka on Wednesday, March 13th, at five o’clock in the evening. The marriage was a quiet affair, only a few witnessing the ceremony. On Thursday noon the young couple took the train from Anoka to the twin cities for a brief honeymoon, returning to Franklin on Saturday noon.

The groom is one of Franklin’s most prominent young men. He is one of the proprietors of the city barber shop and has always served the patrons of that popular institution in a manner satisfactory to all and with credit to himself. he is a young man of and affable courteous disposition and has succeeded in making friends with all whom he has come in contact.

The bride is the charming daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Melhus, highly respected people living a short distance southwest of town. She is held in high esteem by all her associates who are pleased to see her happily wedded.

The Tribune extends congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. Sanchez, and hopes that their cup of happiness may always be filled to o’erflowing.

I had wondered why their marriage was a “quiet affair” out of town. Most young couples from small towns want to celebrate with all of their friends and family.

Then I did some simple math and realized that this was probably because she was pregnant.

They were married on March 13, 1901 and their first child was born on July 31st.

I love that my ancestors weren’t perfect.

My Sanchez-Tereso ancestors lived in an area of Keokuk County, Iowa, called Hedrick.

The town motto, which welcomes you from the main road, says “Where Friends Meet”. That may be true, but there sure aren’t many of them! It is a small town, with about 800 people living there. My great-great grandparents lived on a farm just north of town – from the 1860′s until she died in 1918.

It was never a very large town, but it had a quaint downtown with gorgeous old buildings. I saw pictures of parades going down main street from late in the 1890′s.

We drove through town last week, looking for the cemetery where they were buried.

The downtown is now like a ghost town. The old buildings are still standing, but they are boarded up and neglected. There are weeds growing through the sidewalks.

The farms in the area seem to be thriving, but I think that everyone drives to the larger towns to shop and do business.

There are people living in the town. The post office is open, as is the city hall. The lady at city hall was really nice and helped me find the cemetery I was looking for.

It just makes me so sad to see a town in such a state of decay. I would love to see someone invest in restoring the old buildings down main street – much the way they do in Savannah, GA. It would be such a quaint town!

Did any of your ancestors live in what has now become a “ghost town”?

I know that it’s not nice to play favorites. I have five kids and I always try to keep things pretty equal between them.

I really can’t help myself when it comes to my ancestors though. I play favorites and I’m not sure why. I think that maybe I tend to like the ones that I have more biographical information on. Names and dates aren’t all that exciting. Stories are.

Jacob Frederick Sanchez-Tereso, my great-great grandfather is definitely at the top of my “cool ancestors” list. He led such an interesting life. He spoke many languages, served in the military, and had a rare book collection. My kind of guy!

A little background info before I give you his obituary. Fred’s father was Nicanor (Nicholas)Gonzalo Sanchez-Tereso. He was born in Herencia, Spain and moved to Germany sometime around the Napoleonic Wars. He married Anna Marie Weber there and all of their children (Fred included) were born in Germany. I can’t wait to dive into some German research, because I have a feeling that the Sanchez-Tereso’s are going to stick out like a sore thumb there.

Another side note. His obituary is very detailed (Which is so wonderful! I wish everyone’s obits were so fact-filled) but I noticed that a portion of it was in present tense (as if he were still alive) and it sounded very familiar. I realized a portion of his obit is almost word for word from the biography included on him in the local county history.

Here is the obituary which I found at the KeoMah Genealogical Society’s library in Oskaloosa, Iowa. This was published in “The News” of Sigourney, Iowa, dated April 27, 1882, on page 3, row 3. (The town, by the way, is not pronounced like “Sigourney Weaver” – the emphasis is on the “Sig” instead. It was painful for me to hear this said over and over, especially since I had been mispronouncing the name of this town for about 10 years.)

Frederick Sanchez-Tereso, of Benton township died Monday evening last at 9 o’clock. He was until recently a member of the Board of Supervisors, and resigned on account of ill health. He has been suffering with lung trouble for almost a year and most of the time was confined to the house. In the loss of Mr. Tereso the county loses one of its best and most popular men. He had a fine education and was competent to take charge of most any kind of business. the whole county will sympathize with the bereaved family. He was born March 30, 1824, at Hackenheim, Hessen, Germany; his father was a native of Spain, and his mother was of German ancestry; his youth and early manhood were passed at the place of his birth, where he attended first the common school and then the high school; German, Latin, Greek and French were some of the studies here pursued; at the age of 17 years he was appointed clerk of the court, which official position he filled to the satisfaction of the higher officials, and with credit to himself. On the outbreak of the revolution of 1849, when but 24 years old, he received the important appointment of General Financial Secretary, under the Republic at that time established; this position he held for about six months, when the Republic collapsed, and in company with other patriots he crossed the Rhine into France, and after remaining there a short time, he embarked at Havre for America. He arrived at New York in September, 1849, and from there he went to Philadelphia, where he engaged in the printing business; after remaining there for ten months he returned to New York to meet his parents, and while there awaiting the arrival of the ship he was employed by a publishing house as a translator. Upon the arrival of his parents they set out for Iowa and settled in Jackson township, this county; in [I believe it says 1856] he removed to Benton township and settled where he resides, owns a farm of 270 acres, under good cultivation; has a comfortable, well arranged house, in which is a choice library of rare books. In August 1862, he enlisted as a private in Co. F Thirty-third Iowa Infantry; June 2, 1863, he was promoted to the position of first lieutenant; served during the war, and was discharged July 2, 1865 at New Orleans, and after his discharge returned home; December 24, 1857 he was married to Miss Matilda J. Britton, a native of Henry county, Iowa; they have seven children: Milton F., Helen (now Mrs. Handleman), Nancy A., Sheridan P., Viola, Theadore, and Oscar G.

Didn’t he lead an interesting life? He was definitely so much more than an Iowa farmer. I really need to brush up on my German history and read more about the revolution of 1849 so that I can understand his life a bit more. Do any of you have Germans that came to America during this time period? Did they do so for a similar reason?

Did he really play it? Or was it simply a prop? Would someone want their picture taken with a banjo if they didn’t play it?

I’m sure that there are people out there nowadays that would love to get their picture taken with an electric guitar, even though they don’t play it. It would be cool. Is he just trying to play cool with the banjo?

Sand in the shoes, how annoying.

I really have no information on this picture at all. No idea who these women are, when this was taken (maybe in the 30′s), and what beach they might be at. I see palm trees though and it looks like they were having a fun trip together!

This picture was amongst my Grandpa Don’s collection. I am guessing that the woman on the right might possibly be one of his sisters. Complete guess of course. Do any of you recognize this beach?

My cousin, Wendy, from Shaking Leaves, found our ancestors on the 1874 Plat Map of Steady Run Township, Keokuk County, Iowa. The Milton Price Brittain family was living right near the township border.

I then looked further on the map of the neighboring township of Benton to see where Milton’s daughter and her husband, Jacob Frederick Sanchez-Tereso were living.

<img class="alignleft size-full wp-image-2005" title="Sanchez-Tereso,-F-web" src="http://www.climbingmyfamilytree.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/Sanchez-Tereso-F-web1.jpg" alt="" width="800" height="358" /

When you put the two township maps together, the two families were living very close to each other.

I love maps. Seeing where my ancestors lived - and who their neighbors were. Things start to make a bit more sense.

I searched further, and found the Sanchez family in the 1861 map.

The difference in detail between the two is huge. The earlier version doesn’t have boundary lines, simply names and points. It’s still helpful in placing him on the map though.

I really wish that more of these maps were available online, because they are so helpful!!
