I really love the WWI and WWII Draft Registration cards available on Ancestry. The cards are so informative and have helped me out a lot in “fleshing out” my research – literally.

I like that I’m able to tell what their height and build, and eye and hair colors are. I also get a surprise once in a while and learn about medical problems that they may have had.

In this case, from the WWI Registration, I found out that Loveman Jackson Cossabone of New Jersey was missing his right leg at the knee. I’m now interested in learning about how he may have lost it. He was only 34 years old at the time he filled this out, so that must have been a great blow when it happened and affected his work and life.

He was also in the WWII Draft Registration, but at age 59 he wasn’t a likely candidate. This form doesn’t even mention the fact that he’s missing a leg.

I found these various articles/ads about him in the Bridgeton Evening News, dated May/June 1920. Perhaps this explains why I found an article on him rolling around in the snow for his heath.

Practicing. Ellsworth Pierce D.P. (drugless physician) is now practicing in Bridgeton, his office being at his residence, 143 Fayette street. Mr. Pierce has been studying for four years and went to Chicago for the last eight weeks of the course at the International College of Drugless Physicians. The features of this “school” are massage, dietetics, corrective exercise, hydrotherapy, mechanotherapy, and spondylotheraphy. Your attention is called to the advertisements in the Evening News.

That tired, devitalized condition of your body is not normal, and it can be easily and pleasantly relieved and revivified with the natural nerve stimulants and the elimination of the fatigue poisons. Ellsworth Pierce,, D.P. Drugless Physician Phone 88 143 Fayette St. 6-26 lt

Your body is composed of sixteen well known chemical elements and if these are supplied in their natural organic form and in the normal quantities, your body is normally and correctly fed and healthy tissue formed, if not your body is relatively starved and disease of some nature results. These facts are for you to know. Ellsworth Pierce, D.P.
Mr. and Mrs. Ellsworth Pierce, of Fayette street, have returned from visiting friends at Garretstown, Pa. While taking an automobile trip they had a very narrow escape from severe injury. They were going down a steep hill when the brakes refused to work and the car went down into a deep rut and the occupants were thrown against the hood with great force. Mrs. Pierce’s face was cut and bruised and she suffered from shock.
