Arrest Man Who, Women Say, Has Hypnotic Kiss

Atlantic City, N.J., Sept. 12 – A man identified by police as Jess Ray Mowery known in San Francisco as “the man with the hypnotic kiss,” was in custody today.

Police Chief James McMenamin, who said his prisoner had been “satisfactorily identified” as Mowery, notified San Francisco police, who were on their way here to return him to the coast, where he is wanted on bigamy charges. The prisoner denied he is Mowery.

Mowery was dubbed “the man with the hypnotic kiss” after two women charged he married them after captivating them with his kisses.

Here is one I found in the Indiana Messenger, Indiana, PA from 1884. It sounds like it belongs in the National Enquirer.

Last summer Miss Lucy Shepherd, of Farmingdale, N.J., lost a valuable earring. The house was thoroughly searched, and the yard swept and the ash pile screened, but no ring. About three weeks ago Miss Shepherd died, and the day after the funeral a chicken was killed for dinner, inside of which was found the missing ring.

Stuck in a Woman’s Foot It Comes Out at Her Head.

Special to The Republic.

Clayton, Pa, March 27 – Mrs. Mary C. Cossaboon stepped on a needle 28 years ago. It entered her right foot and was never removed. While combing her hair yesterday Mrs. Cossaboon felt a pricking sensation on the top of her head, and in a few moments pulled out the needle.

During three years she had experienced no pain until a few days ago, when she noticed a sore spot on the top of her head, where the needle came out. It was as bright as new.
