I did some browsing at Whoopee Bowl Antiques a couple of months ago. They have a lot of wild stuff there.

No, I did not come home with a snowman or a crystal ball. Instead, I bought this photograph.

I have no idea who these people are, but I love old photos and I couldn’t resist buying it. Besides, it was taken by the “Photographers to the Queen” – Done & Ball (successors to Brown, Barnes, + Bell). How could I pass that up?

That feeling you get when you finally see a picture of an ancestor you’ve been working on for years and years (around 14) is absolutely priceless. Putting a face to the name you’ve been researching is so rewarding. It makes that ancestor so much more real (at least in my opinion). I can immediately relate to them more. I am more interested in learning their story.

I have a distant cousin who sent me these pictures this past month. I am so thankful and am looking forward to sharing them with the rest of my family.

These pictures are of James Patrick Thornton (1824-1887), my 3rd great-grandfather. He came to the U.S. (first to Illinois and then Nebraska) from Ireland.

These photos were scanned from an album in my cousin’s possession. The album has a stamp that says “Patent June 6, 1882″ in it.

This man is John Edwards, my 3rd great-grandfather. On the right is his second wife, Delia (Rudd Bybee) Edwards. I’m not sure who the girl on the left is – perhaps one of their granddaughters (they had no children together, so it would be from one of their first marriages). John died in May of 1931, so this picture must have been taken before then.

I’ve always loved this picture though. It was taken across the street from the Davidson Brothers Motor Company in Kansas City, KS.

The four men sitting are the Campbell Alexander Davidson, Thomas Talbot Davidson, Matthew David Davidson, and John Caffrey Davidson. I believe the man standing on the left is Earl Davidson (he is one of those that owned the place), and a son to Campbell Alexander. I think that the man on the right might be Earl’s brother John, but I could be wrong (if you read this Mom Woods, please correct me if I’m wrong!!)

My great-grandfather, Theodore Sanchez, was a barber by trade.

This is a picture I made a copy of when I was visiting my grandfather a number of years ago and of course I didn’t make any notation of where this shop was or who is in the picture. My grandpa has since died and I don’t know who has the original of this pic – and if it might have writing on the back of it. I really make myself mad sometimes.

Anyway, I’m assuming that this was his barber shop, or one he worked in. I’m just not sure of when it may have been taken and where it is located – in Minnesota or Washington. Any ideas on the time period?

That is not Theodore standing in the front, that I know. He might be the one standing in the background, but I’m not sure. I’m sharing this with family in hopes that they might have some answers.

If nothing else, this is a neat picture of an old barber shop.

I love it when I find a document that has my ancestor’s signature on it. There’s just something about knowing that they were the one that wrote that.

I was happy to find these signatures in a probate packet for Sophia Ross Pottgen (my 4th great-grandmother). It was dated 1877.

Joseph Padgen, Kate Harris, and Louisa Thornton (my 3rd great-grandmother) were her 3 children. James Thornton was Louisa’s husband and Philip was his brother. They lived in Alton, Illinois – not too far from St. Louis, Missouri.

It’s always interesting to me to see the different ways that Pottgen is spelled – and it makes me wonder if this is the reason that I have a hard time finding them. Besides being on both sides of the river (in the St. Louis area and in Alton, Illinois) the name also seems to have been spelled in various ways: Padgen, Potgen, Poettchen, Poettgen, Pottgen, Patkin, Podgen, etc.
