Military Monday: Academy Graduation

One of the reasons I’ve been so quiet on here {besides my computer crash and subsequent data loss} is the fact that my husband just graduated from the Sergeants Major Academy. We had a solid two weeks of ceremonies and goodbye parties to attend., along with out-of-town guests. There just hasn’t been any time for much of anything. Things have quieted down now though and “normal life” {whatever that is, right?} has resumed.

I just wanted to share a picture of my husband, walking the stage at his graduation. He is shaking hands with the Sergeant Major of the Army, and receiving his diploma.

And here is my daughter, wearing her daddy’s new rank.

Of course, his rank has changed yet again, as he has become a Command Sergeant Major instead of just a Sergeant Major. Seems kind of silly to have worn the rank for a single week. What a waste of thread.

Here he is at his battalion Change of Responsibility as he takes over as the new Command Sergeant Major. I’m so proud of him!!

Military Monday: My Grandpa Was Appointed “Fall Guy”

This certificate was amongst my Grandpa’s military things. He served as a Marine on the USS Cabot during WWII.

Have you ever seen one like it before? Too funny!

Military Monday: Eliza Hensley Agee’s Widow’s Pension

My ancestor, Austin Agee, served with the Confederacy during the Civil War.

After his death in 1890, his wife Eliza applied for and received a widow’s pension.

I was so excited to receive this packet a number of years ago. Up until that point, I had assumed that those who served under the Confederacy didn’t receive pensions. This was only a few pages long, so nothing compared to the Union pension packets, but it is full of very helpful, important information.

It looks like my Papa was pretty good at writing everyone’s names on here.

Hopefully someday, a researcher will be able to find their ancestor.

Military Monday: Alphonso Thornton Jr. Holds 18 Battle Stars

I’m so proud of my “Papa” as we always called him. He saw so much action by the time he was 20, but it was that way with many men during WWII. I can’t imagine what a stressful time this must have been for his mother, having four sons all gone to war at the same time. Thankfully, they all came home!

Here he is on the left, with a friend. I really wish that I had a picture of all 4 brothers together. I wonder if they took one after the war.
